beauty favourites autumn 2017

I filmed this month’s beauty favourites on my new iPhone 8 and I’m actually quite pleased with the quality. One would hope that it would be good, considering the handset costs around the same as a small second-hand car, but it actually exceeded my expectations. Apart from the sound, which is very clear but a little on the quiet side – I had to ramp it right up when I was editing.

Mind you, I suppose I was filming from across the room – if the microphone was any more sensitive then you wouldn’t be able to use the iPhone as an actual phone because you’d be deafening the person on the other end! “HELLO? I’M FILMING MY SEPTEMBER FAVOURITES!”

A new – one-off – background for this video, because I was at Chewton Glen in one of the very swanky treehouse suites. I can highly recommend, especially for the outdoor hot tub, the breakfast hamper and the sound of swishing branches lulling you to sleep. Again, we’re looking at the price of a small, second-hand car, so it would have to be an incredibly special treat, unless you’re so rich that you bathe in a tub of solid gold and use banknotes as loo paper, but the setting is absolutely gorgeous – there’s something very calming about being up in the trees.

(I feel an advert coming on, re the second-hand car thing. Voiceover: “Thinking of buying a small second-hand car? In the market for a used motor? Stop! Why not spend a night in one of the  Chewton Glen treehouse suites instead? Or, for a longer-lasting treat, have you seen the new iPhone 8 Plus? It won’t get you from A to B but it sure as hell takes a good picture!” Hohoho.)

Anyway, here we are with this month’s favourites – a nice mix for you, with a budget-friendly face cleansing oil and a wrap blouse that’s both immensely flattering and effortlessly glam. You can find more info and links below the video screen. Oh, and please do excuse Baby Ted and his drumming/gurgling/generally distracting behaviour: I had to have him on my lap because he’s being all (cute and) clingy at the moment. I know there’s no need to apologise, for most of you, but some people get quite cross when I’m not 100% serious and focused, so, y’know…

October 2017 Beauty Favourites

I spent the majority of my allotted filming time for this October Favourites video clarting about with my hair, trying to arrange it so that I didn’t look like a Cluedo character.

(Miss Scarlett, if you’re asking. There’s something about blonde hair of a certain length, styled in a certain way, that – when worn with a high-necked top – will always have an air of the Cluedo character about it.)

Anyway, after much ado, I finally settled on “scraped back”, which allowed me to fully concentrate on the matter at hand (talking about favourite beauty products) rather than being constantly distracted by my appearance on the camera’s flip-out screen. Because if it’s not a Cluedo character staring out at me, then all I can see is a medieval pageboy called, I dunno, Phillip.

Or a horn-player from Henry VIII’s court. Called Barrington. Or a sensitive, prolific Elizabethan poet called Randall.

October 2017 Beauty Favourites

There are a few rather protracted waffling sessions in this video, including one on retinols and one on shower gels that don’t irritate your private parts. I had to cut some of the more ridiculous waffles because the video was far too long but there’s plenty left in to keep you mildly entertained for a few minutes. And on a more serious note, I have found some excellent beauty bits this month – skincare with proper, visible results, an affordable nail polish with incredible longevity and an all-in-one makeup palette that (for once) doesn’t leave me cold.

You can find a shortlist of the favourites beneath the video pane, but for now – press play!

Forgive the radio silence: I’ve been moving. I feel as though I’ve said that a lot over the last few years, but I’m hoping that this will be the last time. Actually, I can tell you that it will be the last time – there’s no way I’m moving again. For a start, I’m in my house of dreams (it’s Georgian and has shutters at the windows!) but the main reason is that all of my family would disown me. I think that tolerance levels for my various enthusiasms and projects have peaked – we’ve done renovations, we’ve done cross-country relocations and now we’ve done “the big move”. All whilst growing and raising two babies, which is stressful enough in itself.

I want to do some blog posts on our relocation and house-hunt in the new year, so keep a look out for those. I won’t be doing a house tour because it always feels a bit creepy to be giving the world a guide to your home’s layout and contents (“hello there! Do come in – television and laptop is on your left, bag collection just to the top of the stairs!”) but you’ll see a lot of it in the backgrounds of videos and photos. So I’ll leave it up to your imagination to piece parts of it together – I couldn’t honestly be happier, it’s the house I would always have drawn if someone had asked me where I would most like to live.

Anyway, I’ve gone off piste here – I only checked in, on my dodgy tethered-to-the-iPhone internet connection, to post up my November Favourites. There are a couple of absolutely brilliant fashion buys here as well as the usual beauty – the Label Mix sweater at Next* is amazing and the little glittery star constellation ring from Warehouse* is only eight pounds and makes a very cute stocking filler…

I’ve had a lot of requests for a run-down of my hair and makeup look in this video – I can’t for the life of me remember what I used, so need to go under hypnosis or similar and try to tap into my subconscious. I know that I used Max Factor cream eyeshadow to highlight the inner corners of my eyes, and the mascara is good old Clarins Supra, but the rest of it? I’ll have to do some serious memory-searching.

Watch, enjoy, share – all of the featured products are listed below the video pane for quick reference.

february favourites

I’ve changed the format of my favourites video, you may be interested to know. After the roaring success of my 17 Most Used Beauty Products of 2017 video, I decided to make the “most used” aspect a regular feature so that you could see exactly what I’ve been reaching for again and again. The favourites video will now be less beauty-centric and more a general roundup of the month’s best things, whether that might be a TV series or a book, a takeaway restaurant or a person.

I’m easing myself into it, this month, so there’s nothing too abstract, but I do talk about my new bed (there’s more on beds here) and my undying love for Stan Smith Prime Knit trainers. Take a look – my Most Used Beauty video will be up in the next few days, for those desperately seeking a skincare fix.

My Top Five Favourite Things: March 2018

march favourites

It’s safe to say this hasn’t been the best month of my life; but then again, I think I said that about February, too, and I’m not sure whether March was slightly better or ever so slightly worse. So forgive me if my mind wasn’t 100% attuned to remembering things to feature in my Top Five Favourite Things video: I did have an inkling as to what I’d include, but the daffodils were a late addition. And perhaps a bit of a “cheat” item.

Although difficult to ignore, because the end of my garden is completely blanketed in them. Thousands and thousands of daffodils. I reckon, if I was weird and incurably mercenary, I could easily make a couple of grand if I cut all of my daffodils down and set up a stall at the end of my drive. Especially if I wore one of those little caps that look like white cotton shower caps, and some sort of netting petticoat under my dress. “Buy my flowers Mister? Oh please do stop your ‘orse and buy some of my bee-yoo-tiful daffodils?”

I get a bit carried away dreaming of the past, living in this house. It’s very easy to squint at things and picture it exactly as it must have been in the early 1800s. Apart from the fact that I keep buying very modern things to furnish it with! I’m hoping that the final effect will be rather eclectic, but my interiors fantasy online browsing is starting to get out of hand. French antique apothecary chests one day, Willy Rizzo coffee tables the next…

I’ve gone totally off piste, so here’s the video and I’ll shut up and let you watch it – Most Used Beauty for the month will be up in a few days or so. The jumper I’m wearing in the video is from Hush here* – I had quite a few questions about it. Also, I’m hosting a quick Colab Dry Shampoo giveaway if you fancy winning some Unicorn spray! It’s on Instagram and I’m @modelrecommends.

My Top 5 Favourite Things: April 2018

It’s a good Top 5 Favourite Things video, this month. I had time to really ponder my favourites, save the best of them into my brain and then build them up to almost mythical levels of amazingness. To be fair, Grace Timothy’s book, Mum Face, is already actually at mythical levels of amazingness and my beauty picks this month are also epic. (One of them is from my own brand, so I suppose I’m blowing my own proverbial trumpet, but hey – if you can’t love your own products then something’s not right!)

The Crystal Retinal 6 from Medik8 (find it here) is brand new to the market and offers a hugely powerful upgrade to your standard retinol treatment. I’m going to write a proper blog post on it because the formulation is very exciting and the brand, Medik8, is long overdue a bit of a write-up on here. I realised when I went on a lab tour with them that I had been using a cleanser of theirs (featured years ago here) and a hydrating serum for ages and love them both, but have never featured them. So, watch this space.

Okey dokey, get on with it – click that button! If you don’t want to watch (and see my holiday tan, which might make you jealous, even though I literally got about three minutes a day to sit in the sun) then the product list is below the video screen.

Beauty, Fashion and Home Favourites: May 2018

guerlain rouge g lipsticks

It’s time for the May favourites. A mixed bag again, this month, as I’m featuring more beauty in the Most-Used videos. So there are two beauty things (both of which you can read more about here on the blog, links below the video pane), one sort-of-beauty favourite and two things for the house. Annoyingly, if you fall in love with either of the interiors favourites, both are one-offs. I reckon my Mum could be enticed into working her magic for profit (she made the amazing wall hanging I feature towards the end of the video) but the mirror was another fine purchase from Wells Reclamation yard (which appears to have become my new spiritual home) and they only had one.

Although I’m sure there are other antique mirrors of a similar style – just be mindful of transportation, if you do happen to get over-excited around oversized objects. (Hello.) Barry the Iron Man, weighing in at 1.5 tonnes, was not at all easy to move – he required a crane on a lorry – and the mirror, which is too heavy to be wall-mounted (it has anti-tip brackets on the back) had to be lifted to the first floor and brought in through a double-window because it was too big to get up the stairs.

Oops.

All of these giant things appearing in the house make me feel a bit like a Borrower. I might start sleeping in a matchbox and eating my dinner off a giant button. I love playing with scale – anything outsized, or miniature, it all really floats my boat. I have no idea where it stems from, but perfectly scaled-up or scaled-down objects fill me with an obscure sort of happiness. Those huge display perfume bottles in department stores, or gigantic reels of cotton in the window of a haberdashery. Very pleasing.

Anyway, enough of my musings and onwards with this month’s video. Or last month’s, I should say – bloody hell this one is really late, isn’t it? I’ve just realised we’re halfway through June! And if you like the interiors stuff, I did a post about my downstairs loo. Just in case you missed it.

Favourites: June 2018

summer dress peacock chair

In a Monthly Favourites first, I have included something that only appeared on the scene a few minutes before I started filming. In fact, when I think about it properly, it shouldn’t even be in the June Favourites because I got it in July! Oh well, let’s not split hairs: this find was so amazing it had to be featured immediately. But perhaps what was even more amazing than the find itself was where the find was found.

At a car boot sale.

I have resisted Mr AMR’s attempts to get me to go to a car boot sale for over nine years – I think the last one we went to was in Southampton the year after we got married – but yesterday I agreed to have a mooch around our local one, primarily because the chicken feed shop wasn’t open for another forty minutes and it was too hot to sit in the car. (Oh, how life has changed.)  Anyway, we dondered on in, past the man with the megaphone selling meat from the side of a lorry and there was the Peacock Chair of dreams staring us in the face.

Why on earth nobody had snapped it up I have no idea; an original cane chair from the sixties, great condition, an iconic piece that would look good pretty much anywhere… I’m going to waft about in kaftans and get Mr AMR to take soft-focus backlit photos of me draped over its arms. Hopefully the dog won’t try to eat the new chair, because he quite likes basket-y, rattan-y stuff – he’s chewed my Fortnum & Mason picnic hamper, the little git.

Anyway, sixty quid and now I have a chair that makes any room I put it in look like a set from a retro soft porn film**. Can’t do better than that. (**Apparently.)

Other favourites this month? Two lip things, one bargain dress and a face cream that makes my skin look as though I’ve been on a month-long health retreat. The lipliner isn’t the most exciting thing in the world, but it’s incredible what a difference it makes to the shape and perceived size of my lips if I just even out the lipline a little bit; not that I particularly want those hyper-pumped lips that are all the rage, I just want to be able to see where my own lips end. Because the boundaries are getting a bit hazy with age, if you catch my drift.

I actually did a post on that a while back – What A Difference A Lip Line Makes. See the before and after pics, if you don’t believe me.

Right, on with the show. Links to the things I chat about are under the video pane!

Interesting fact: when I went to write the title of this post I couldn’t remember what year we were in! I typed 2017, but that didn’t look quite right and then I typed 2019 but that just seemed very unfamiliar and then my mind went blank and I simply couldn’t recall any sort of useful information that might give me a clue as to what year we currently reside in.

So that’s promising.

Whilst I still have any kind of memory at all, let’s get on with the July Favourites. You’ll particularly like this month’s favourites video if you are looking for the absolute holy grail of complexion enhancers: there’s a full review coming up, but be prepared to be won over by the Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter based on description (and my crazy rave review) alone.

charlotte tilbury flawless filter review

It’s spectacular stuff – it brightens, evens out skintone, adds a hint of colour and – most importantly – leaves your face with the sort of dewy, summery glow that you’d only get naturally if you had done a three day Yoga retreat in Ibiza. You can find it online here* if you really can’t wait for the before and after pictures – I wear shade 3 but the shades are quite sheer and adaptable, so I also just about get away with a 2.

Also, the amazing Scamp & Dude Charity Swag Bags are back in stock! When we launched them (Caroline Hirons, Ruby Hammer, Sali Hughes and Sam Chapman also designed bags) they sold out almost instantly but there is now more stock, so if you would like to grab yourself the best (huge) beauty bag that money can buy then click here. All of the profits go to our respective charities – mine is the Genesis Research Trust, you can read more about my charity choice here.

Well I’m not at all sure what happened to this video when I put it up on Youtube; the views crept in so slowly I thought that maybe I’d accidentally put some kind of explicit content warning on it or applied an age restriction! (Although I’m sure either of those things would make someone want to watch it more.)

Perhaps it was bad timing, or maybe everyone had already used up all of their enthusiasm on Sunday’s video, which was a sort of beauty-centric “Supermarket Sweep”. Who knows? The ways of the internet are beyond me; I mean, who wouldn’t want to watch a video covering such diverse and engaging topics as house-painting, baby-weaning and pink lipstick? All in one place?

The mind boggles.

Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid

As well as the aforementioned subjects, there’s also a rather energetic recommendation of a certain skincare wonder: Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting BHA Liquid Exfoliant. Now I’m not going to write too much about it here, because there’s a proper review in the making, but suffice to say this product is – or should be – a beauty cabinet essential for anyone who gets hormonal (or indeed non-hormonal) breakouts. It’s a wipe-on-and-leave salicylic acid that removes dead skin cells from the skin’s surface as well as doing a deeper down de-clogging of the pores. Brilliant for bumpy, pustulous skin, blackheads and also redness. I’ve used this, or a very similar product from Paula’s Choice, for years. I crack it out in my pre-period week to help calm my angry face (shame it can’t do anything for actual, real rage which I get in epic proportions) and it’s just the most convenient, uncomplicated SOS treatment.

(Trial-size Skin Perfecting BHA Liquid online here*, you can find the full-size here*)

I’ve listed my favourites below the video screen – more books than beauty, this month! – but please do click play, if you have the time, as I like to know that you’ve had to endure my waffling. It gives me a sadistic sense of satisfaction.

Photo above included to demonstrate why it’s not a good idea to try and take still life photos with a small child about: two seconds later the entire pile of “favourites” had crashed onto the floor, obviously with the open lipstick landing first and everything else weighing in on top. Obviously. It had to be the scenario that would cause the most mess. By the way, Angelica’s face isn’t dirty – she had been face-painting earlier in the day, which she likes to do herself, using a hand mirror, like a very serious artist doing a self portrait.
