may beauty favoruites

It has been a month of disappointments, beauty-wise; face creams that didn’t cut the mustard, shampoos that ended up in the charity pile and a weird waterproof-mascara-remover that looked like an actual mascara (you brush it on from root to tip and leave the oils to dissolve your makeup) but failed to do the job on my lashes both times I tested it out. Sigh.

So finding my favourites has been rather labour intensive – there have been dozens and dozens of rejects for every good discovery – and a couple of this month’s featured products are actually not that new. The Suqqu Moisture Mask, for example, which has bulldozed its way back into a favourites video due to its sheer magnificence in the hydration department, and the Nail Tinted Moisturisers from Butter London, smart little low-key polishes that I’ve been using for quite a few months.

But my round-the-clock beauty testing has paid off (ha! oh the dedication) and there are a few proper gems in this video that I know I’ll be using for years to come. The lightweight Hydra Beauty Lotion from Chanel is a sort of essence-serum that really gives a brilliant moisture boost –  you’ll be sick of hearing about by the end of the week, because it’s in tomorrow’s post as well. The Royal Oil from Too Faced is new to me but has gone straight into the drawer for must-have body-finishing products. It’s holiday skin in a bottle – glowy, gorgeously scented and with just a hint of a tint, excellent for adding polish to legs and arms.

June Favourites: Books and Beauty

books and beauty

Beauty favourites were a bit thin on the ground, last month, but I did do quite a bit of reading so I’ve shared this video between reading recommendations and beautifying tips. The Anne Tyler book (here) is just a beautifully gentle, slow-paced novel, examining the relationships within a family and gradually revealing more and more about their backstory. It’s not a “page-turner” (that’s not really what Anne Tyler does) but I still looked forward to getting back to it every night before bed – it made me very contemplative and appreciative of my own family and friends.

I’ve only just started Emma Cline’s The Girls (here) but already I’m hooked. It’s set to be quite a dark read, I think – I have tried not to look at any reviews (it’s getting a lot of publicity), but from what I gather it’s about a murderous Charles Manson-esque cult. Gritty subject matter, but the writing style, so far at least, is totally engaging – shrewd and observant but with a certain softness. I’ll report back when I’ve finished, but I think that this will be a great summer read, if you’re after one.

On with the video! A list of favourites can be found by scrolling down the page, if you don’t want to sit through my waffling…

July favourites, including a response to some of the comments on my Best Budget Foundations video and one new product that I just don’t get. You’ll have to click play to find out what it is – as usual all of the products are listed below the video pane. Enjoy!

August Favourites / Market Research

favourite beauty products august

The August Favourites are in – but I have a burning question before you start devouring the various little beauty morsels I’ve prepared. It concerns video “thumbnails” (those little pictures that appear along with the title so that you know vaguely what you’re about to watch) and – more specifically – the types of thumbnail that grab your attention.

Now I’ve always assumed that people like to see me, preferably wearing a smarmy grin and grasping a product in my hand like a QVC presenter, but recently my confidence in this has wavered. Wouldn’t a still life photograph be more chic, more representative of the content people are about to see? I think to myself. Would a beautiful close-up picture of a Chanel lipstick be more enticing than yet another photo of my face, hair scraped back, skin looking moon-like against a dark grey background?

august favourites

Tell me, my ever-brilliant sounding board: which of the pictures on this page would make you more likely to click through and watch a video on “favourite products”? A photo of the products (top) or a photo of my face (above)? I’ve added a little voting app on the page, to make things easier:

Which thumbnail image would most convince you to click on today's video?

And now that I’ve rinsed you for some valuable information and insight, it’s time for the August Favourites. Settle in and get ready to take a bit of a fancy to a new eye cream I’ve discovered…

A few dislikes in this month’s favourites video, because I know how you all like a little moan! You already know that Clinique’s Superbalanced Makeup didn’t quite float my boat, so that won’t come as a surprise, but there are a couple of books this month that I really wish I hadn’t wasted my time on. Watch the video to find out what’s hot and what’s not in the World of Crilly – there should have been a whole load of skincare in this video, but my brain is only half-working this week and I forgot to put it in. A treat to look forward to in November, then…

november favourites video a model recommends

There’s a bumper skincare crop in this month’s favourites, as promised. Not as bumper as it could be, but my legs had completely fallen asleep during the making of this video and then I got to that stage where the blood starts to flow back in and it’s impossible to decide whether the sensation is a) orgasmic or b) the most painful thing you’ve ever experienced.

Anyway, lots to be getting on with – I do love the thick, rich Avene cream for these bitter, wintery days, and the Clarins Repair Concentrate is a Godsend if you’re feeling chapped and sensitive. I’ve also included the Chanel red-eye dupes in this video, so apologies if that’s a little on the repetitive side for you regular readers (proper post here) but I don’t like anyone to miss out. I’ve actually found another brilliant reddish, coppery shadow in the Estee Lauder Sultry Nudes palette, if you’re interested – I wore it last week a few times and though it’s not as edgy as the proper matte, brickish rouge, it still gives that warm, sultry sort of glow. You can peruse the shades in that palette here – all incredibly wearable and easy to blend.

Right, eyeballs at the ready for my November Beauty Favourites – press play, or if you can’t see the video screen then please click here. All of the products mentioned are listed below.

December Favourites

best beauty products december 2016

This video wasn’t supposed to go up until Sunday, but something odd and enthusiastic happened with my Youtube scheduling, so here it is: the December favourites. I spend almost the entire video wearing hair rollers, which is a bit weird, but there are some real beauty finds in this month’s round-up so do give the video a go!

Ooh – a quick note about Beauty Pie. I filmed this video straight after hearing about this new makeup subscription service, Beauty Pie, which gives you “luxury” cosmetics at cost price – NO mark-up – so long as you pay their monthly fee. Now at the time of filming, I did quite enjoy the idea of this concept – it was new, fresh and seemed to be about to shake things up a bit in the beauty world. Nothing wrong with that. But in the few weeks that have gone by since filming, I’ve had a good old think about the whole thing and also tried quite a lot of the products and I’m just not sure that it’s something I buy into. The £10 a month fee gives you access to all of their makeup at cost price (so, for example, a lipstick at £2.24 rather than twenty-odd quid) but that’s with a five pounds shipping and handling charge on top and so all of a sudden, if you just want to buy a lipstick that month as a treat, you’re almost up to the cost of a luxury lipstick anyway. And the luxury one, say Dior or what have you, would be beautifully packaged and would feel like a proper treat.

So I’m torn. There are some lovely products, and the site looks great – really swish and Net-a-Porter-y, but do people really want to shop for their beauty in this way? Or would they rather have the freedom to shop from a wide range of brands whenever they fancy? I just can’t see many people wanting to sign up to a monthly commitment like this. What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments! You can read more about Beauty Pie here.

Excuse my blusher overload in this video – I got rather carried away testing that new Hourglass palette that everyone is raving about. (It’s nice, very glowy, not for everyone. God forbid any of the powders catch you around the eye area – it’s like putting a spotlight on your fine lines! Anyway, it’s not out for a couple of weeks, I’ll do a post.)

I sort of wish that I had done a “behind the scenes” vlog, too, because my filming set-up was – quite frankly – ridiculous. I couldn’t sit on the floor (too pregnant) so I sat on a wicker hamper, but the wicker hamper COMPLETELY COLLAPSED under the weight of me. I almost punctured my bottom by landing on a pair of precise-point tweezers and along the way I crashed into a carefully stacked pile of makeup palettes. It was carnage.

Anyway, I’ll leave you with that mental image – do enjoy!

february favourites video

The February Favourites, as promised; mostly beauty but then a couple of fashion finds that have cheered up my “capsule” wardrobe no end. (When I say capsule wardrobe, I mean it quite literally – I have only one pair of black leggings that don’t hurt my c-section scar, and I wear these on rotation with some jersey cut-off yoga pants. I have three vest tops and two hooded sweatshirts that I can breastfeed in, three soft nursing bras and eight pairs of size 16 M&S high-waisted briefs.)

hush aloha 2017 sweater

I’d like to draw your special attention to the Hush sweater I wear in the favourites video; Hush have some brilliant jumpers this season, but I think that this Aloha one is just so summery and optimistic. And the bright blue makes me – somehow – look quite tanned. You can find it online here, if you fancy a bit of colour injection.

Skincare favourites include the quite wonderful Elastin serum from Bakel and the Miracle Eye Cream from Anne Semonin. I’ve had great results with both – a plumped, less fatigued-looking eye area with the Anne Semonin and an increased feel of elasticity to my skin (forehead especially) from using the Bakel. Both pricey-pricey, but very impressive performance.

(I realised upon finding links for the products in this video that the Anne Semonin eye cream contains retinol, and some say to avoid it whilst breastfeeding. Now look, I did a piece on pregnancy and ingredients to avoid (link here) and I am a bit nervy about some active ingredients during pregnancy, but I think that the amount of Vitamin A you could pass on to your baby via using an eye cream and then breastfeeding would be absolutely minimal to the point of negligible. And I’m pretty sure it’s the developing foetus that you have to watch out for, not a fully developed baby. So I’ll ask around and get back to you on that one, but BOY have I loved using that eye cream!)

Here’s the video – my first after a bit of a maternity break. If you want to read about the behind-the-scenes chaos then read yesterday’s post!

march beauty favourites

Back to the beauty favourites – a good mix of body, hair, skincare and makeup this month. Oh, and some panty liners thrown in for good measure. I deliberated for ages (ten minutes) over whether to include panty liners – they’re not exactly the most glamorous of items – but they have been my most-used item of the month, so it would be wrong of me to leave them out!

(Thought: what is a “panty”? I mean, I know what pants are, and I know what pant-ies are, but what is a pant-y singular? Half a pant? And we don’t even say pants in Great Britain, we say knickers! Are panty liners an American thing? And the name has crossed over the ocean along with the concept of very small, very thin sanitary towels that are only good for the most minor of leakages? Someone please enlighten me.)

Anyway, these liners are “of note” because they are pure organic cotton (breathable) and aren’t fragranced. I won’t go into too much detail here (I’m going to do a gross TMI post on The Uphill soon!) but fragranced panty things do not agree with my most sensitive parts. God knows why you’d want anything perfumed touching that bit of your body – you’re just asking for trouble. So yeah, these are just natural and nice.

On that note, let’s get on with the video, shall we? If you do want to read lots of posts with far too much information shared about my body then make sure you bookmark (or subscribe to) my other blog, The Uphill.

Did you ever play a game when you were little called Kim’s Game? We used to play it at Girl Guides. It probably has loads of different names and ways to play it, but our version was this: you’d have a tray with a load of objects on (things like pens and buttons and whistles and so on) and you’d get a set amount of time to look at them all and remember them. Then the tray would be covered up with a tea towel and you’d all have to write down as many things as you could. The winner was the person who could remember the most objects.

Anyway, to cut a long (and possibly very dull) story short, trying to shoot still life pictures with a toddler around is a bit like Kim’s Game. Every time I look at my board, there’s something missing – a lipstick, perhaps, or the lid from a perfume bottle) and then I have to go hunting around to see where Angelica has put it. I thought that I had all of my beauty favourites there when I took the photograph above, but when I went to edit it, I realised that there was an eyeshadow palette missing and also a mascara! Oh well.

You’ll need to watch the video to see the full run of my beauty favourites, this month – there’s a good mix of skincare and makeup and a rave about eyebrow tinting. And some footage of New Baby Ted gurgling away on his activity mat. (See last post for a chat about how cute and distracting he is at the moment.)

Beauty Favourites: May 2017

There’s rather a summery theme to this month’s beauty favourites; it feels a little early in the year to be cracking out the sunscreens and the beachy scents but we’ve had a run of hot days and so I’ve been in all-out floaty dress and flip-flop mode.

Talking of beachy scents, for the past few weeks I’ve been coating myself from head to toe in something called Bum Bum Cream. It’s not what you’d imagine – though from my recent post titles (sex in a lay-by, dad wrote a porno, overactive tits, etc) I would forgive you for thinking it was something naughty. It smells like cake, sun lotion and a hint of aftershave. Which makes it sound gross, but it’s strangely addictive. It’s like a sexed-up version of Laura Mercier’s Creme de Pistache body cream and has a similar luxury price-tag, but the Bum Bum contains guarana, which is apparently a really powerful form of caffeine and so helps with circulation and toning in the – er – bum bum region. Because who doesn’t want hyperactive and jittery arse cheeks?

So, May favourites: SPFs, sexy scents, a cooling facial spray and a few choice makeup items. Randomly, this favourites also features raspberry liquorice – I was chomping my way through a bag of it whilst filming, so it seemed rude not to give it some recognition. It’s my current sugary poison and it’s how I’ve been fuelling my poor, nutrient-deficient body when I can’t (be bothered to) get to the kitchen. I really need to have some sort of dietary shake-up but am seriously lacking in motivation – some days are excellent, with superfoods and nuts and vegetables galore, others see me eat pastries for breakfast and lunch and then a couple of crumpets with jam for supper. Oh dear. Time for an overhaul methinks…

I’m still keeping myself amused with the bobbly-shafted Wonderball waver from Lee Stafford. Not in the biblical sense – let’s keep things clean! – but it has been presenting me with plenty of opportunity for a bit of immature banter. “Have you felt my cool-touch knob?”, “have you seen my ribbed rod?” etc.

All joking aside, I have used this tool more than any other hair wand. If you want to see the original review, it’s here – I do have a little correction to make on that post, actually, because I thought that Mark Hill had discontinued their Wicked Waver (another bobbly wand) but they’ve just changed it to a separate handle and wand combo. You can find more info on their website here.

Do watch the video below for more favourites and a bit of smutty chuckling as I try to remember the word for the long, hot part of a curling tong (“prong?” “shaft?”). The word I was searching my small, dirty mind for was “barrel”.

beauty favourites autumn 2017

I filmed this month’s beauty favourites on my new iPhone 8 and I’m actually quite pleased with the quality. One would hope that it would be good, considering the handset costs around the same as a small second-hand car, but it actually exceeded my expectations. Apart from the sound, which is very clear but a little on the quiet side – I had to ramp it right up when I was editing.

Mind you, I suppose I was filming from across the room – if the microphone was any more sensitive then you wouldn’t be able to use the iPhone as an actual phone because you’d be deafening the person on the other end! “HELLO? I’M FILMING MY SEPTEMBER FAVOURITES!”

A new – one-off – background for this video, because I was at Chewton Glen in one of the very swanky treehouse suites. I can highly recommend, especially for the outdoor hot tub, the breakfast hamper and the sound of swishing branches lulling you to sleep. Again, we’re looking at the price of a small, second-hand car, so it would have to be an incredibly special treat, unless you’re so rich that you bathe in a tub of solid gold and use banknotes as loo paper, but the setting is absolutely gorgeous – there’s something very calming about being up in the trees.

(I feel an advert coming on, re the second-hand car thing. Voiceover: “Thinking of buying a small second-hand car? In the market for a used motor? Stop! Why not spend a night in one of the  Chewton Glen treehouse suites instead? Or, for a longer-lasting treat, have you seen the new iPhone 8 Plus? It won’t get you from A to B but it sure as hell takes a good picture!” Hohoho.)

Anyway, here we are with this month’s favourites – a nice mix for you, with a budget-friendly face cleansing oil and a wrap blouse that’s both immensely flattering and effortlessly glam. You can find more info and links below the video screen. Oh, and please do excuse Baby Ted and his drumming/gurgling/generally distracting behaviour: I had to have him on my lap because he’s being all (cute and) clingy at the moment. I know there’s no need to apologise, for most of you, but some people get quite cross when I’m not 100% serious and focused, so, y’know…

October 2017 Beauty Favourites

I spent the majority of my allotted filming time for this October Favourites video clarting about with my hair, trying to arrange it so that I didn’t look like a Cluedo character.

(Miss Scarlett, if you’re asking. There’s something about blonde hair of a certain length, styled in a certain way, that – when worn with a high-necked top – will always have an air of the Cluedo character about it.)

Anyway, after much ado, I finally settled on “scraped back”, which allowed me to fully concentrate on the matter at hand (talking about favourite beauty products) rather than being constantly distracted by my appearance on the camera’s flip-out screen. Because if it’s not a Cluedo character staring out at me, then all I can see is a medieval pageboy called, I dunno, Phillip.

Or a horn-player from Henry VIII’s court. Called Barrington. Or a sensitive, prolific Elizabethan poet called Randall.

There are a few rather protracted waffling sessions in this video, including one on retinols and one on shower gels that don’t irritate your private parts. I had to cut some of the more ridiculous waffles because the video was far too long but there’s plenty left in to keep you mildly entertained for a few minutes. And on a more serious note, I have found some excellent beauty bits this month – skincare with proper, visible results, an affordable nail polish with incredible longevity and an all-in-one makeup palette that (for once) doesn’t leave me cold.

You can find a shortlist of the favourites beneath the video pane, but for now – press play!

Forgive the radio silence: I’ve been moving. I feel as though I’ve said that a lot over the last few years, but I’m hoping that this will be the last time. Actually, I can tell you that it will be the last time – there’s no way I’m moving again. For a start, I’m in my house of dreams (it’s Georgian and has shutters at the windows!) but the main reason is that all of my family would disown me. I think that tolerance levels for my various enthusiasms and projects have peaked – we’ve done renovations, we’ve done cross-country relocations and now we’ve done “the big move”. All whilst growing and raising two babies, which is stressful enough in itself.

I want to do some blog posts on our relocation and house-hunt in the new year, so keep a look out for those. I won’t be doing a house tour because it always feels a bit creepy to be giving the world a guide to your home’s layout and contents (“hello there! Do come in – television and laptop is on your left, bag collection just to the top of the stairs!”) but you’ll see a lot of it in the backgrounds of videos and photos. So I’ll leave it up to your imagination to piece parts of it together – I couldn’t honestly be happier, it’s the house I would always have drawn if someone had asked me where I would most like to live.

Anyway, I’ve gone off piste here – I only checked in, on my dodgy tethered-to-the-iPhone internet connection, to post up my November Favourites. There are a couple of absolutely brilliant fashion buys here as well as the usual beauty – the Label Mix sweater at Next* is amazing and the little glittery star constellation ring from Warehouse* is only eight pounds and makes a very cute stocking filler…

I’ve had a lot of requests for a run-down of my hair and makeup look in this video – I can’t for the life of me remember what I used, so need to go under hypnosis or similar and try to tap into my subconscious. I know that I used Max Factor cream eyeshadow to highlight the inner corners of my eyes, and the mascara is good old Clarins Supra, but the rest of it? I’ll have to do some serious memory-searching.

Watch, enjoy, share – all of the featured products are listed below the video pane for quick reference.

My Top 5 Favourite Things: February 2018

I’ve changed the format of my favourites video, you may be interested to know. After the roaring success of my 17 Most Used Beauty Products of 2017 video, I decided to make the “most used” aspect a regular feature so that you could see exactly what I’ve been reaching for again and again. The favourites video will now be less beauty-centric and more a general roundup of the month’s best things, whether that might be a TV series or a book, a takeaway restaurant or a person.

I’m easing myself into it, this month, so there’s nothing too abstract, but I do talk about my new bed (there’s more on beds here) and my undying love for Stan Smith Prime Knit trainers. Take a look – my Most Used Beauty video will be up in the next few days, for those desperately seeking a skincare fix.

My Top Five Favourite Things: March 2018

march favourites

It’s safe to say this hasn’t been the best month of my life; but then again, I think I said that about February, too, and I’m not sure whether March was slightly better or ever so slightly worse. So forgive me if my mind wasn’t 100% attuned to remembering things to feature in my Top Five Favourite Things video: I did have an inkling as to what I’d include, but the daffodils were a late addition. And perhaps a bit of a “cheat” item.

Although difficult to ignore, because the end of my garden is completely blanketed in them. Thousands and thousands of daffodils. I reckon, if I was weird and incurably mercenary, I could easily make a couple of grand if I cut all of my daffodils down and set up a stall at the end of my drive. Especially if I wore one of those little caps that look like white cotton shower caps, and some sort of netting petticoat under my dress. “Buy my flowers Mister? Oh please do stop your ‘orse and buy some of my bee-yoo-tiful daffodils?”

I get a bit carried away dreaming of the past, living in this house. It’s very easy to squint at things and picture it exactly as it must have been in the early 1800s. Apart from the fact that I keep buying very modern things to furnish it with! I’m hoping that the final effect will be rather eclectic, but my interiors fantasy online browsing is starting to get out of hand. French antique apothecary chests one day, Willy Rizzo coffee tables the next…

I’ve gone totally off piste, so here’s the video and I’ll shut up and let you watch it – Most Used Beauty for the month will be up in a few days or so. The jumper I’m wearing in the video is from Hush here* – I had quite a few questions about it. Also, I’m hosting a quick Colab Dry Shampoo giveaway if you fancy winning some Unicorn spray! It’s on Instagram and I’m @modelrecommends.

My Top 5 Favourite Things: April 2018

It’s a good Top 5 Favourite Things video, this month. I had time to really ponder my favourites, save the best of them into my brain and then build them up to almost mythical levels of amazingness. To be fair, Grace Timothy’s book, Mum Face, is already actually at mythical levels of amazingness and my beauty picks this month are also epic. (One of them is from my own brand, so I suppose I’m blowing my own proverbial trumpet, but hey – if you can’t love your own products then something’s not right!)

The Crystal Retinal 6 from Medik8 (find it here) is brand new to the market and offers a hugely powerful upgrade to your standard retinol treatment. I’m going to write a proper blog post on it because the formulation is very exciting and the brand, Medik8, is long overdue a bit of a write-up on here. I realised when I went on a lab tour with them that I had been using a cleanser of theirs (featured years ago here) and a hydrating serum for ages and love them both, but have never featured them. So, watch this space.

Okey dokey, get on with it – click that button! If you don’t want to watch (and see my holiday tan, which might make you jealous, even though I literally got about three minutes a day to sit in the sun) then the product list is below the video screen.
